Program Note
Michelangelo Frammartino blurred the boundaries between the inside and the outside, fiction and non-fiction, and humans and non-humans in The Four Times (2010). After ten years, he has returned to introduce Il Buco, a poetic adventure. While Europe’s tallest building is being built in Northern Italy in the early 1960s, a group of speleologists begins to explore a cave in the Calabrian region in the south. The film portrays the early exploration (1961) to Bifurto Abyss, 700 meters below the surface of the Earth. The camera enters the cave and follows the black hole without an end in sight until it reaches another world made up of rocks and darkness transcending time. The director shows in parallel the world inside the cave and the life of an old shepherd in the plateaus of Pollino, inviting audience to the mysterious and absolute beauty that can only be found in the deepest parts of the world.
