Program Note
The most remarkable thing about Love is that the two main characters, an old couple, never gets out of their apartment from the beginning to the end of the film. Even the dream of the old man, who should take care of his wife, takes place inside the apartment building. In this sense, <Love> is a film that makes you feel claustrophobic as you look into the head of the old man. An unexpected event happens to an old couple in their 80s who depends on each other: all of a sudden, the wife got hemiplegia and dementia. The husband devotedly takes care of his wife, but things get harder and harder. Their daughter visits them from time to time to find ways to do something about it. But there is no clear solution. The man considers euthanasia, which is one option for a man caught between reality and despair. The director Michael Haneke expresses such an agony with the gesture and eye movement of the characters instead of dialogues. The film, which looks like the world of poetic inspiration filled with silence and images, makes the audience keep watching it while holding their breath. (LEE Sang-yong)
