Program Note
Arguably one of the most important directors of our time, Wang Bing is one of the first filmmakers to come to mind when considering the achievements of cinema in the digital age. He always focuses on those outside the world’s interest, films them over a long time, and releases films that occasionally far exceed the standard running times. Among them, Three Sisters is possibly the most simple, deep, and heartfelt film. The daily life of three sisters—ten- year-old Yingying, six-year-old Zhenzhen, and four-year-old Fenfen—who live in a small village in the mountains of Yunnan Province in southwestern China, is a struggle for survival itself. Their father has gone to work far away, and the mother has long left the children. The camera observes these poor and weak children dryly, but behind that camera, Wang Bing discovers their sublime beauty every moment with a more generous gaze than ever before. (KANG Sowon)
