Gianfranco Rosi spent two years on and around the Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA), a ring-shaped road that encircles the city of Rome. Rosi’s method, which involves getting to know the space and its people by staying in that area without a camera before starting to shoot a film, may be too slow to capture a single event, but it is perfect for discovering a story. By stitching together pieces of life around the GRA, he creates a tapestry of small yet impressive stories. A world where a paramedic, a botanist, a mansion owner, an eel fisherman, camper women, and a father and daughter living together in a low-income apartment are all main characters. Sacro GRA stirs up the impulse for fiction, leading us to make up more stories than we’ve seen. This film earned Rosi the Golden Lion at the Venice Film Festival, which was a first for a documentary.
