Can smartphones be a new weapon for the people of the 21st century? Today anyone can take a picture of the lowest places on earth with a camera in their hand and send it to the world. Silvered Water, Syria Self- Portrait was created by such power of the people; it is a documentary made possible only in the 21st century. Syrian director Ossama Mohammed who fled to Paris in 2011 begins a Facebook chat with Kurdish woman activist, Wiam Simav Bedirxan. When asked what he would film if he were in Syria with a camera, Mohammed answered, “Everything.” That was how footage taken by Bedirxan and 1,001 Syrians came together. Cinematic mourning seeps through the city in flames, overflowing blood, and moments that make the audience want to look away, and Silvered Water, Syria Self-Portrait becomes an answer to what to do with film in the face of the horrors of war.
