A found footage film about World War II by Ukrainian master filmmaker Sergei Loznitsa, <I>THE NATURAL HISTORY OF DESTRUCTION</I>, was inspired by W.G. Sebald’s book of the same name. The film focuses on the Allied bombing of Germany in World War II. Loznitsa’s radical and original work with archive films is intentionally inattentive to identifying places or camps. He offers no narration or caption, no distinction between friendly and enemy forces. Yet his message is clear: Can we tolerate civilian massacres from indiscriminate bombing during war? Through strategic editing that connects two opposing worlds, ironic images crossing between spectacles and tragedies, and creatively designed sounds, Loznitsa’s outstanding film inevitable evokes the current tragedy of Ukraine.
