In Harmonium (2016), the winner of the Un Certain Regard Jury Prize at Cannes, or A Girl Missing (2019), which competed at Locarno, Fukada Koji focuses on how our unrealistic image of the family may be, in fact, rather dangerous. An event transpires when a stranger invades a family’s space and continues with unexpected developments. Love Life has a similar plot. Taeko dreams of a happy married life with her young son. But a tragic accident occurs, bringing Taeko’s ex-husband back into her life. A Korean man with hearing impairment, Taeko’s ex-husband appears looking wretched and revolves around her. Unable to look away, she makes a decision that others do not understand. Our preconceived notions of love and family crumble in front of Taeko’s choice. (NAM Dong-chul)
