Program Note
Helmer Park Chan-wook’s eleventh feature film, Decision to Leave, follows a detective Hae-jun (Park Hae-il) and a prime suspect Seo-rae (Tang Wei) who is investigated for murdering her husband. Suffering from insomnia, Hae-jun monitors Seo-rae every night and falls for her. The film delicately turns the intense relationship between a detective and a suspect into the feeling of love between a couple making itself the most honest and sentimental one in the director’s filmography. It is outstanding in the way the director presents his uniquely esthetic mise-en-scene, unhesitating and elegant editing, poetic conversations, and well-placed symbolic devices. It is also quite impressive to see how the characters’ emotions permeate into the genre structure of a crime drama and a noir. The word ‘love’ is never spoken, but its existence is finely proved.
