Program Note
A mysterious disaster breaks out in a small Belgian village and spring stops coming. The order of nature is destroyed and the residents′ life becomes messy. Only Alice and Thomas, teenagers living in this forest village, strive to understand the collapsing world. The new film made by Peter Brosens and Jessica Woodworth, Belgium′s world-renowned author-directors, is an excellent work drawing attention with it beautiful images and moderated mise en scene. After the film starts, a man and a chicken are taken by the camera during a two-minute long sequence. The existence of the camera and sophisticated mise en scene shown in this scene dominate the entire film. In this film composed with long sequences, each shot is as refined as Flemish art. In particular, the immense scale of the landscape shots is overwhelming. The last part of the film criticizes the cruelty of the human world deprived of life, leaving a lasting impact to the audience. (RHEE, Soue-won)
