Program Note
We live in a high-tech world where smart phones reign supreme, but the possibility lingers that the gadget may become a thing of the past under extreme circumstances. Charu encounters just such a situation. The director tells the story of a young upper-class woman in Mumbai who faces dire circumstances after a day worker comes to her home to paint a wall. She soon finds him unconscious on the floor. She rushes him to the hospital but he does not survive and no one can identify him. So she takes a picture of the dead man with her phone and takes to the streets. The camera follows and captures even the minutest details of Charu’s quest as she roams the streets, armed only with one snapshot. We don’t really know what drives her relentless pursuit, but it’s hard not to root for her as she embarks on this adventure. What she is looking for transcends simple identity to touch on the dignity of a man lost within the conveniences of a materialistic civilization. (PARK Jinhee)
