Program Note
A minstrel Ashik Kerib falls in love with a rich merchant’s daughter. He goes on a journey to marry her, promising to return in 1000 days after traveling to the end of the world. She waits with poison in one hand and a knife in the other. <Ashik Kerib> is a film dedicated to Andrei Tarkovsky who died in 1986. It is no coincidence the 1000-day journey reminds of the painter in <Andrei Rublev>, who is on a long journey to paint a mural. Reflecting Parajanov’s late interests, Turkish and Azerbaijani folk music and dance, and beautiful folk paintings fill the screen. (CHO Young-jung)
Director
Director
Sergei PARAJANOV
Born in Tibilisi, Georgia in 1924 to Armenian parents. After studying film and music, he became an assistant director at the Dovzhenko Studios in Kiev, making his directorial debut in 1954. In 1964 with <Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors>, he was recognized a startling genius. Followed this up with the even more innovative <Color of the Pomegranate> (1968), but he was imprisoned most of the 1970s with the conflict with the authority. Returned with <Legend of Suram Fortress> (1986), he proved that he is indeed the greatest master of the 20th Century. He passed away in 1990 with cancer.
