Program Note
A film about a Korean-American family in search of hope, Minari premiered at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Audience Award and the Grand Jury Prize. It continued its success receiving numerous awards from around the world including a Best Supporting Actress Academy Award for the great Youn Yuh-jeong. The entire cast moves the audience to tears in this film that once again put director Lee Isaac Chung on the map after his feature debut Munyuranabo (2007) premiered in the Un Certain Regard at Cannes. A father moves his family to a rural town in Arkansas to start a farm. His wife wants to return to California, and the grandmother who came to live with her daughter, does her best to help with the children. The day-to-day lives of this family is captured through the eyes of young David. Minari is honest and heartwarming human drama about people who have worked hard in their own way for a better tomorrow.
