Program Note
This is the fourth feature by Jang Hyun-Soo known for conventional action melodramas such as Walking All the Way to Heaven and Born to Kill. In this theatrical adaptation of Ha Byung-Mu′s novel, depicted a star-crossed love between a step-brother and step-sister is depicted. The poverty-ridden Hyuk-Soo emerges as the new muscle of the underworld. He is in love with his step-sister, Eun-Hae, but maintains his distance from her. Hyuk-Soo goes to jail for the gangster organization, and Eun-Hae marries Cull-Min who has been pursuing her in order to release Hyuk-Soo. Chul-Min starts beating Eun-Hae after realizing that she has no blood ties with Hyuk-Soo. To this, Hyuk-Soo warns Chul-Min to stop the violence only to make matters worse. He chooses to be executed in Eun-Hae′s place after she murders Chul-Min. The film stubbornly sticks to classical conventions, now somewhat foreign to a 90s sensibility. It is questionable whether this film will be able to rekindle a nostalgia, but the film is unique in the sense that the director presents and interesting genre film with realistic images and meticulously choreographed action scenes.
