Program Note
Carmen loses her mother who was a flamenco dancer and she is raised by her father, who is a famous bullfighter, and a mean stepmother. She learns bullfight from her father and becomes a member of a traveling troupe. Against the backdrop of Spain in the 1920′s, this film pays homage to a black-and-white silent film. The film starting with a bullfight scene in Sevilla is a beautiful melodrama full of a Spanish taste based on the reinterpretation of Snow White written by the Brothers Grimm. The name of the daughter born of a bullfighter and a flamenco dancer is also Carmen in a highly symbolic way. The dynamic plotline, guitar melodies, flamenco and the characters′ splendid costumes add vigor to the black-and white silent film, making it a rare excellent work. From the middle of the film, a secret room in a Gothic mansion becomes its background, providing the audience with a special moment of watching a Hollywood classical meldodrama or a thriller from the 1940′s. A Snow White with a strong personality from the Iberian Peninsula allows the audience to fully enjoy the savor of Spain. (RHEE, Soue-won)
