Program Note
Even if it’s clear where we’re headed, we’re going all the way together without a single glance away. Filled equally with suspense and laughter, Ransomed is the latest film from Director Kim Seong-hun, who has proven his ability to direct tense and suspenseful films such as A Hard Day, Tunnel, and the TV series Kingdom. Set in 1987, Min-joon (Ha Jung-woo), a young diplomat in the Middle East, accepts an unofficial mission to deliver the ransom of an abducted Korean citizen living abroad to secure a promotion. Min-joon heads to Beirut, the capital of Lebanon, where a civil war is raging, but his mission goes awry from his arrival. After a series of twists and turns, he receives help from Pan-soo (Ju Ji-hoon), a local Korean taxi driver. Ransomed manages to keep thrills and humor in perfect balance of push and pull, maintaining exquisite tension throughout. The vivid scenes crafted through international locations, coupled with familiar laughter that acts like a seasoning, add an extra dimension to the movie. (SONG Kyung-won)
