Program Note
In the latest from Taiwanese filmmaker Yang Ya-che, Kaohsiung high schoolers Aron, Mabel and Liam are best friends and three sides of a love triangle. Spurned by Liam, Mabel has settled for Aron, but in Taipei during the reform movement, Mabel catches Aron with another girl. Later still at a friend’s autumn wedding, the three reunite and Liam and Mabel reconcile their complicated feelings, Liam finally urging Mabel to be happy with Aron if he can’t. After becoming pregnant with Aron’s child, Mabel realizes the tremendous barrier before her, and in summer 2012, Liam and Mabel raise Aron’s child together. Although unfolding against the backdrop of Taiwan’s democratic movement of the 1980s and ’90s, the film’s theme is not political in nature, focusing instead on the intersection of friendship and love. Though Taiwan’s history and social environment are key, the internal struggles of the protagonists and their misguided emotions separate the film from others of the Taiwanese New Wave. Youthful unrequited love, memories not easily forgotten and heartbreaking reunion come together to ask: What is true love? (KANG Naeyoung)
