Program Note
A long trip that will lead you to unexpected places, even if you have seen the film before. Sometimes called ‘Poland’s greatest cult film’, this is a classic example of a frame story (tale-within-a-tale-within-a-tale). Presented tales correspond to each other, change the meaning of previous tales and shed different light on already defined characters, creating a unique labyrinth of a story about reality and illusion, the interpretation of which differs with subsequent viewings. Has‘ untamed imagination, sumptuous cinematography, hallucinatory staging of scenes and the story itself make <Saragossa Manuscript> one of the best proofs that film is a dream. (Michał CHACI?SKI)
Director
Director
Wojciech Jerzy HAS
He is called the greatest visionary of Polish cinema. Such films as <Saragossa Manuscript> (1964) or <The Hour-Glass Sanatorium> (1973) are prime examples of his favourite subject: a character’s journey of self-discovery in a fantastic world. His films are devoid of political overtones and presenting damaged characters or outsiders seeking answers to more universal, philosophical questions.
