Program Note
For a brief moment before his tragic death in 1961, Andrzej Munk was the yin to Andrzej Wajda’s yang in Polish cinema. <Bad Luck> is exactly the opposite of Wajda‘s romantic and poetic approach to Polish history. Munk presented World War II here as an arena of chaotic, senseless happenings where the protagonist was not a hero but a tragicomic coward suffering from the discrepancy between his ambitions and his abilities. Formally the film was designed as a summary of cinema history with various historical and modern techniques used for subsequent films.<Bad Luck> remains an ironic review of national Polish character ? one of the best in Polish cinema‘s history. Director
Director
Andrzej MUNK
He finished only three feature films before his tragic death yet he remains one of the most beloved Polish filmmakers. His <Eroica> (1957) and <Bad Luck> (1960) questioned Polish cinema’s traditionally heroic approach to World War II and showed ordinary characters in tragicomic situations.
