Program Note
<Beijing Flickers> is a story of the despair among Beijing’s youth. San Bao is a poor young man who stops speaking after his girlfriend dumps him for a wealthy married man. He suffers suicidal tendencies brought on by the agony of rejection based on economics. His friend Wang Ming works as a valet at a fancy hotel and spends his days being disdained by the wealthy. He meets a young man named Shaos who aspires to gender reassignment and is scorned by others for that. No matter how they try to escape, the three men are always brought back to reality. San Bao breaks his silence to accept responsibility for his pregnant ex-girlfriend’s baby. As He recites, “Where there is no light, even the darkness is a lamp,” the camera toggles between new apartment towers and dilapidated old houses, scanning the agony and rage of China’s youth. A bluish hue as hard as reality permeates the film while speaking to those who live in the jungle of materialism hoping to, “not lose their nerve in the game of life!” (KANG Naeyoung)
