Program Note
"Coming out " takes different forms depending on the culture. A Queer Story illustrates the situations of gays in Hong Kong and China. the story focuses on the love between middle-aged Law Kar-Sing and young Sonny while depicting relationships with other people in their lives. The responses of Law‘s father and Law‘s former girlfriend, Chuen, when he reveals his gay identity: a wife‘s visit to the marriage counselor Law when she finds out her husband is gay; gay prostitutes;Law‘s friends Frederick Mao and his boyfriend K.K, and Law‘s other girlfriend who owns a restaurant and her son - all these characters and their lives contribute to a most engaging story of love, conflict and identity. Shu depicts the relationship between Law and sonny as no different than that of a heterosexual couple with a two-fold resulting message. It is to create an interesting narrative for viewers while eliminating the prejudice towards homosexuals. Law‘s life is complicated by the fact that not only is he troubled by his love for Sonny but also by a gay lifestyle no longer compatible with his own aging. The film concludes on an upbeat note, despite the difficulties the characters face with lives where happiness is compromised by restrictions within their own community and an apathetic society.
