Program Note
Da Mata, who spent his childhood in Macao, returns to the city after receiving an unexpected phone call from a friend called Candy. The city seems to have changed a lot in the last 30 years but the life of people living there remains the same and it looks like Candy is in trouble. A very private work, almost autobiographical in nature, <The Last Time I Saw Macau> reads like both a memory and a thriller, it′s cine-essay approach effectively blurring the lines between documentary and fiction. What is notable at the beginning of the film is the sophisticated structure of shots, reminiscent of old photo albums, depicting distant landscapes and carefully composed images of life capture and preserved forever. The main character who also serves as the narrator of the film looks back on "the most beautiful period of his life" while the camera looks into the present at the lively Macau city streets. With references to the original soundtrack from a film by Josef von Sternberg, this story implies that Macao itself is in fact the main character. (RHEE, Soue-won)
