<Ishaqzaade> is a contemporary Bollywood interpretation of Shakespeare′s classic Romeo and Juliet. While there are many modern reinterpretations of the Bard, this film is one of the more creative. As opposed to the original story where the families are enemies and Romeo and Juliet truly love each other, <Ishaqzaade>′s rendering of the central relationship is very current: These Romeo and Juliet were at each other′s throats in childhood, betray and lie to each other in adulthood, and then suddenly come to the realization that they love each other. In contrast to the traditional undefined Montague and Capulet rivalry, the conflict between the two families here arises from very local and realistic reasons: the difference between Hindui and Islam and political competition. The film is jam-packed with the dancing and singing characteristic of Bollywood films, as well as a lyrical and cheerful score that complements the tragic yet delightful romance in the film. On top of that, the performance dynamic between the two newcomers as the star-crossed lovers merits attention. (PARK Jinhee)
