Program Note
Akhtar is a tramp in a city. Although he is penniless, he enjoys freedom, wandering around the city. One day, he meets a rich man and his life begins to change. The sincere friendship between the two men gradually strangles Akhtar’s freedom and leads him to commit crimes. The film starts with Akhtar’s monologue. After starting in an experimental, documentary-like way, the film makes a dramatic turn when the two men meet each other. Akhtar, who used to be free from the rules and classes of a hierarchical society, gradually becomes part of such a society full of contradictions. Such a process of change goes beyond a satire and turns into a tragedy. Simon&Garfunkel’s music is played throughout the film to generate a cacophony with the story and at the sametime, to harmonize with the absurd expressed by the film. (CHO Young-jung)
