Program Note
A story of a curious country girl’s adventure in a big city. The girl, who lives in a calm rural village, dreams of traveling a big world like a bird which freely flies in the sky. She then leaves her home and heads for a big city. After much meandering, she finally arrives in the capital Kabul and meets a city combining splendid and magnificent military parades and Western culture. The film shows the city of Kabul in the girl’s eyes; it is where Western culture, modern military culture and traditional Afghan culture coexist. Seemingly a promotional piece for modernized Afghanistan, it eventually reveals the harsh reality of Afghan society by depicting poverty and violence hidden behind the splendor of the city. It is also the first film to be made only with Afghan actors and staff. (CHO Young-jung)
