This is a special program in conjunction with screening of <Red Scarf> (Shin Sang-ok, 1964) under Archeology of Cinema, and Korean Cinema Retrospective that introduces eight films starring Shin Young-kyun, and iconic figure in Korean film history. Following the footsteps of <Red Scarf>, one of the best war films ever made in Korea, <Soar into the Sun> has been called the second <Red Scarf> already from its pre-production phase. And rightly so. the film is armed with impressive aerial action sequences ? the very first attempt by a Korean film - and CG effects that deliver more than expected. Starring ‘Rain’ Jung Ji-Hoon,”everyone’s favorite husband“ Yoo Jun-sang, and rising star Shin Se-kyung, it is full of episodes that are somewhat cliche yet entertaining. The film is comparable to Choi Dong-hun’s <The Thieves> in that it co-stars many famous faces, contains several romantic sub-stories, and puts high-octane action against the backdrop of Korean peninsula in crisis. Its box-office sales, however, fell short of 1.2 million tickets, even though never users rated it a little higher than <The Thieves>. What the audience wants ? it is a real mystery. (JEON Chanil)
