Program Note
This is a satire film that announced the arrival of a new bangladeshi cinema. The story of the film unfolds in humorous and sharp manners, touching on issues such as religious view, generation gap, tradition and modernization, and family love all at the same time. Amin Patowary, the chairman of local government in the small Bangladeshi village of Mithanupur, puts a taboo on any images. One day, Kumar, an elementary school teacher, buys a television set, which draws large numbers of villagers to his house. Although Kumar is hindu, Amin forces him to get rid of the television set. However, the villagers who now aware of the charm of television react against Amin. The only hope left for Amin in dispair is to go on Haji (pilgrimage to Mecca). But then, his pilgrimage gets into trouble and, unexpectedly, he is saved by the television, which he regards as the biggest taboo. Amin stubbornly refuses to embrace modern civilization as his thinking is based on conservative Islamism . The director, Mostofa Sarwar Farooki, sees his stubbornness as not necessarily a bad thing: Sometimes it demonstrates the problem of excessive religious belief; at other times, it shows the fact that Amin is a feeble old man who loves his family. His series of actions to hold to his religious beliefs seems more like a theater of the absurd rather than a serious matter. <Television> is a satire film with a very unique style. This is the result of the talent and passion of Mostofa Sarwar Farooki who have managed to survive as an independent filmmaker in Bangladesh.

Mostofa Sarwar FAROOKI
The pioneer of an avant-garde filmmakers’ movement called "Chabial" (the Film Hawkers) in Bangladesh, Farooki′s works deal with numerous themes, such as love among young urban people, deception and hypocrisy, frustration on their own cult, traditional concept of guilt and atonement in Islamic world. He has a documentary style that sometimes takes on a poetic aspect. His third full-length feature <Third Person Singular Number> premiered at the Busan International Film Festival in 2009, and went on to compete at the Abu Dhabi Middle East International Film Festival the same year. The film had its European premier at the International Film Festival Rotterdam, 2010 and was awarded Best Director at Dhaka. <Television> is his fourth feature film.
