In <Le Grand Soir>, two brothers ? the elder who considers himself Europe's oldest "punk with a pet" and the younger who sells mattresses ? couldn't be more different. But when the younger brother is fired from his job, the elder takes him under his safety-pin adorned wing and introduces him to a life of anarchy and mohawks. This new film from Gustave Kervern and Benoit Delepine is a hilarious comedy with a unique take on today's capitalist, consumerist governed society. Instead it suggests a different way of living. The main characters think outside the box and the two brothers' parents, particularly their mother, is a charismatic presence. The large supermarket, the major background of the film, and frequently shown surveillance camera screens allow the audience to reflect on the very nature of today's society, unlike the elder brother whose credo is to "live, not thinking about anything". In the end, the siblings declare that they have become one through the slogan "We Are Not Dead." Bravo for the directors who choose a very desirable conclusion. (RHEE, Soue-won)
