Filmmaker, Takashi Miike, known for his rich ideas and dynamic directing approach, a quality which even Hollywood has taken notice of, presents The City of Lost Souls, based on the original story from best selling author, Seishu Hase. A tale of the dark side of an international city, this film illustrates the various kinds of people who are involved in Tokyo′s underworld. The characters in the film are from various nationalities, painting a realistic portrait of a chaotic world. Mario who has saved his lover from a bus accident chooses to flee to a foreign country when the police close in on him. Mario and his Chinese lover, Kei, steal the money arranged for a drug deal between the Chinese Mafia and the Japanese Yakuza to get money for a passport. However, what he gets instead is a bagfull of cocaine. Mario now has to run from the Yakuza and the Chinese Mafia in order to save himself and Kei. Selected by Time magazine in 1998 along with John Woo as one of the ten upcoming filmmakers, Takashi Miike′s obsession with dynamic action scenes are at its best in this film. (Shion Yang)
