Program Note
In "Kitano`s world" of men, violence and peace exist side by side. Two detectives leave the police force with Horibe resigning after a shocking injury, and Nishi departing to take a trip with his ailing wife to spend her remaining days together. When his family abandons him, horibe constantly thinks of suicide. Nishi, however, rediscovers the meaning of life while travelling with his wife. Ironically, Horibe chooses life, while Nishi chooses to die with his wife. Kitano contrasts the excesses of life and death. and violence and tranquility in this excellently edited film. In the violent world, Nishi is bound by codes of masculinity expressed in taciturnity and a sense of justice. Note that Kitano, unrivaled by none in terms of eloquence (being the best stand-up comedian in Japan) is a man of few words in Hana-Bi. While away, the "masculine" Nishi finally realizes the value of love and happiness, and the tragic hero′s "romantic" side appears. His wife`s last words of "thank you" is the climax of this film. This is the second film made by Kitano`s own independent company. Note the paintings -- all original works by Kitano. (Kim Ji-Seok)
