This film is about the long imprisonment of Kim Sun-myung who was taken prisoner as a North Korean soldier during the Korean War in 1951. Kim Sun-myung was imprisoned for 45 years, and by special pardon was sent back to North Korea in 1995. Although The Road Take is an old theme which uses an old format, it is a valuable piece of work which has revived the power and tradition of Korean realist films that had almost evaporated amidst the renaissance of Korean film in dustry, The ordeals and anguish of a simple man, who tried to keep his freedom of conscience by refusing to write the letter of conversion or statement to obey the law, are well represented through the smooth editing process and the composed camera work that seem to intently gaze at the subject, and it delivers a deep impression rarely found in mainstream films. This is only the second feature film made in 10 years by director Hong Ki-seon as he went through all kinds of trials after his first film. Director Hong was one of the leaders in the film movement of the 80s who tried to fight in just ice through cinema. (Huh Moon-yung)
