Program Note
In the Forest Again can be seen as a sequel to Days and Nights in the Forest (1969) by renowned Indian director Satyajit Ray. It was when Goutam Ghose was making a documentary about Satyajit Ray that he got an idea for a sequel to Days and Nights in the Forest. While four men in Ray′s film try to sever the connection with the outside world and peacefully live in nature, the characters in Ghose′s film are now older and once again reflect on their lives. Death has already cast a shadow over them. One of them has already died and another is dying of the cancer. Unlike Days and Nights in the Forest, a life full of energy is not to be found in this film. Characters no longer feel the confusion between the tradition and the modernity. They do not meditate on Mother Nature. Instead, a journey full of unexpected events is replacing them. The director seems to be saying that we should obey the flow of time, and tries to soothe us by hinting that the life is like a party. Such an optimistic attitude is the one that pulls fond reminisce from, now, old characters. (Kim Young-jin)
