Program Note
Twenty-five-year-old Henryk Wichmann is the CDU′s candidate during the 2002 election campaign for the sparsely populated Uckermark/Oberbarnim constituency. Wichmann′s response to industry jobs cutbacks, to 25 percent unemployment and a bad economic forecast is the slogan: "a fresh breeze will give politics new impetus." He′ll certainly need it if he′s going to beat his adversary in the SPD. Markus Meckel, who won the seat four years ago by airect mandate, winning 54 percent of the votes. Armed with ballpoint pens, postcards, match boxes and even bigger posters than were used during the last election campaign, Wichmann is ready to fight for his political vision. He visits old people′s homes, enters into each and every discussion, sings the national an them. Andreas Dresen spent one month accompanying this Bundestag candidate on his tour through the constituency. The result is a film about the absurd, sometimes wearying nature of a political campaign fought in Germany′s small towns and villages, but also a film about the difficulties politicians have in facing up to the realities of a disillusioned society.
