Program Note
Portraying the lives and dreams of various generations of dancers and students in "The Shanghai Dream Factory Danceand Art School", Wayne Peng reveals the changing face of China and its relationship with Taiwan. The documentary Burning Dreams took shape when Wayne Peng met Lili Yang, a teacher at the school, on his visit to Shanghai to shoot a commercial for China′s CC-TV. While Lili Yang′s story of moving to Shanghai from Taiwan to pursue her passion for dance could be a politically sensitive issue, Wayne Peng takes more interest in her passion for dance and 1960s Taiwanese dance culture, as well as how her passion worked with young Chinese dancers of various personalities. The young dancers freely express their ambitions, which proves how rapidly and thoroughly China is changing. Wayne Peng, a director trained in commercials, captures the movements of the dancers with deft camera-work. At the same time, he tries hard to represent the difficulties and conflicts tha tChinese youth face. The intersection of passion and conflict makes this document a ryatruly impressive work.
