Program Note
Chen-Mo, who illegally sells flowers in the street and Meiting, who works at a barbershop, are just two people living in the gutters of Beijing. They meet by chance and end up moving in together. There is no such thing as a future for these two. They struggle to find a home where they can rest their bodies and souls, tired from having grown up alone, without parents, in a violent world. This is most likely the reason behind their co-habitation without much passion or feelings for each other. As two people who exist on the very bottom rung of the streets in terms of finance and emotion, they merely provide each other with a shoulder to lean on. This is the reason why their "Parents Game" of being Mom and Dad for half of the week, is neither interesting nor funny. Love only appears much later in the story. The film′s production method, which is a good mixture of documentary and fiction, tells the lonely story of these two characters without ever changing the contemplative tone of voice. The street scenes, shot like a documentary and with realistic sound, vividly bring out the wildness and heartlessness of city life.
