Program Note
Based on J.G. Ballard′s controversial 1973 science fiction novel of the same name. David Cronenberg′s Crash is a study of the intersection of eroticism and technology, which is manifested in the sexual passion provoked by tragic automobile accidents. Advertising executive James Ballard and his wife Catherine lead complex, if hollow, sexual lives Following a near fatal car crash with Dr. Helen Remington, Ballard is drawn into an exploration of the connections between danger, sex, and death. As their involvement with scientist/photographer Vaughan and accident victim Gabrielle deepens, Ballard and Catherine discover new and disturbing ways of expressing love. Simultaneously repulsive and compelling, Crash takes civilization′s obsessive love affair with motor technology and ll of the associated consumerist fetishism to its logical conclusion. A natural extension of David Cronenberg′s earlier films Dead Ringers (1988) and particularly a companion piece to his adaptation of William Burrough′s cult novel The Naked Lunch(1991), Crash marks an advance beyond either.
