Program Note
The Fast Runner is an epic saga based on an ancient Inuit legend set in the eastern arctic wilderness near Igloolik at the dawn of the first millennium. Evil in the form of an unknown shaman divides a small nomadic community when the camp leader is murdered. The new leader, Sauri, drives his old rival Tulimaq down through mistreatment and ridicule. Years pass and power begins to change when Tulimaqs two sons come of age - Amagjuag, The Strong One, and Atanarjuat, The Fast Runner. As the camp′s best hunters, they provoke jealousy and rage in their rival, Oki, the leader′s ill-tempered son. When The Fast Runner wins away Oki′s promised bride-to-be, the beautiful Atuat, Oki conspires to murder the brothers.

Zacharias KUNUK
Born on the arctic tundra in 1957, Zacharias Kunuk was nine years old when his family gave up their nomadic lifestyle and settled in the new Baffin Island government town of Iglooik. In 1981, already a famous carver, Kunuk sold three sculptures in Montreal and brought home a video camera to a community that did not yet have television. Only shooting on video, Kunuk has made several short films and two documentaries “Nipi” (“Voice”, 1999) and “Nanugiurutiga” (“My First Bear” 2001). “The Fast Runner” is Kunuk’s first dramatic feature film.
