Program Note
In the little Quebecois harbour village of St-Marie-La-Mauderne, the vanishing fish stooke have plummeted a once thriving community into financial decline, forcing the fishermen to rely on govemment welfare. When a multinational company considers building a plastics factory on the island, the inhabitants see an opportunity for the village to be restored to its former prosperity. But due to insurance regulations the factory cannot be built without the town having a resident doctor. Seeking to attract the young Doctor Lewis, Germain spearheads the transformation of the village by commencing an artful seduction of the one vital thing missing that could mean the difference between affluence and poverty. While sometimes ruthless and often clumsy, even the most disillusioned of the town′s 150 villagers rally to the cause to revive their hamlet. Together, and with great dedication, they try to convince the good doctor that St-Marie-La-Mauderne is the ideal place to live.
