Program Note
Bucharest, 1988. Nela assists the death of her father, a former colonel of the Securitate and loyal supporter of the oppressive regime. Her father has bequeathed his remains to medical science. Unfortunately, no one wants his body-neither the Medical-Legal Institute, nor the University, because their refrigerators are not working! Indifferent to the political and social climate of the country, Nela leaves for a teaching post in a provincial city. There, she meets Mitica, a doctor at the local hospital, who, like Nela, is anti-conformist, and full of dreams and optimism. The couple′s natural rebelliousness disturbs everyone they happen to meet. However, they are able to survive, as if by miracle, despite a relentless onslaught of natural disasters, political terrorism, military action. In the end, faced with harsh reality, their love takes on its true strength under a hardy oak tree, symbol of tradition, eternity and optimism about Romania of tomorrow.
