Program Note
Months before a single drop of blood was shed, no one could have told officer Pyotr Grinyov that rebellion was a senseless enterprise. If someone had unveiled her future at that point, Masha Mironova would have been terrified by what was bound to happen in several months′ time: the murder of her parents, separation from her beloved, becoming prisoner of the love-mad Alexei Shvabrin. Escaped convict Emelian Pugachev could not have known that he would take the name “Peter III” and devastate half the country, soaking it in blood. Pugachev could not foresee that, in chains, he would implore the Empress and people for mercy only to lose his head to the executioner′s axe. A bloody peasant revolt, horrific and merciless, breaks out and rages through villages, towns, and people′s destinies...Based on short novels by Alexsandr Pushkin, The Captain′s Daughter brings eighteenth century Russia to life with elaborate sets and meticulously detailed costumes.
