Program Note
Driving while intoxicated, Ku-Ho hits Mijo and takes her home in a flurry. Strangely enough, she has no bruises whatsoever and, the very next day, she is found to suffer from amnesia and is unable to speak. Ku-Ho′s guilty conscience soon turns into deep attraction for her and pretty soon he′s able to hear Mijo′s voice through telepathy. His friends are skeptical of this strange relationship and begin investigating Mijo′s background, discovering incredible secrets regarding her family in the process. At that moment, Mijo′s psychic power is unleashed, exploding beyond her control. Based solely upon its storyline, it′s easy to consider Secret Tears as just another horror-mystery, especially for fans of the director′s debut work, Whispering Corridors. But Park′s sophomore effort is much difficult to locate in a single genre. Instead of gripping suspense, what we have is a mysterious environment that′s lasting in secrecy. If the school represented the oppressive element in his previous work, the family serves a similar role here to torment the girl, though it is absent on the screen and presented only in an indirect manner. Instead of social messages and enjoyment originating from genre films, Secret Tears attempts to release the phenomenon of psychic powers in a visual way. Only when we decide to be captivated in psychic power and ignore common sense, do we succeed in entering into the film′s psychic realm.′ (Han Sang-Jun)
