Program Note
Just as Romeo and Juliet has been re-made for centuries, the love story between Sung Choou-Hyang and Lee Mong-Ryong has been transferred into film form in Korea for many years. IM Kwon-Taek′s Chunhyang is the 17th film derived from this tale, including both North and South Korea. The historical record shows the very first film adaptation was made in 1923. If Shakespeare′s tragedy is the basis of most film versions of Romeo and Juliet, then the original work of Chunhyang is based on Pansori, the traditional Korean theatrical songs. Director Im remarked he was deeply moved upon hearing "Choon-Hyang Ga” (song of Choon-Hyang) by Cho Sang-Hyun, even deeper than reading a fine script, and, thus decided to turn that performance into a film form in its entirety. That is to say, the Pansori itself is the script of this film as well as its narration and its background music. From the beginning, Chunhyang was intended to fall outside the traditional film structure of the West and resulted in a very first "Pansori film." The emphasis given to the sound is greater in this than most conventional films, yet it′s hardly music video. The only proper way to describe this film may be a term like Koreanness,′ yet at the same time, Chunhyang is expanding the expressive sphere of world cinema
