Wim Wenders has crafted a poignant, funny film about contemporary America. Opposing perspectives relay the hope that truth is not an ideal lost in the socio-political realm of America in 2003. Paul is a Vietnam War veteran - a Green Beret - suffering the side effects of Agent Pink exposure. He is a patriot and committed to doing his part for the war on terror. His long forgotten niece Lana is a would-be college student who has just returned to America after ten years in Africa and Europe. She now works at a homeless mission. After witnessing a shooting of a homeless Middle Eastern man they set out to uncover the truth behind the incident. Having vastly differing motivations, their respective worldviews collide while on their quest. Wenders′ belief that patriotism has been abused in post-World Trade Center America does not make Land of Plenty anti-American. The abuse of the ideals of freedom and democracy at the hands of paranoid right-wing press and government inspired the film, and it is very much about the clash of the Left and the Right.
