Program Note
Soyros tells his young daughter about the natural selection process of bees. We only hear his voice. The moment then reveals itself as a reminiscence. His daughter is getting married, and the table we see - and at which we assume he told her this story - is set up for a wedding reception. Spyros is feeling agitated at the idea that his adored daughter could be vanishing from his life. So agitated, he packs up, leaves his wife and heads south to take up his family′s traditionally agricultural lifestyle. Along the way he meets a hitchhiker who insinuates herself into Spyros journey - and in doing so drives him further from humanity. The Beekeeper is about the erosion of a culture and a way of life. However, it is also a sympathetic portrait of a man′s isolation and estrangement from a world he feels disengaged from. The contrasting images of unity and rupture throughout the film underscore the fracturing of modem Greece and the disintegration of family.
