In Landscape in the Mist, Theo Angelopoulos′ habitually retuming father character is absent. His children, Alexandros and Voula, are searching for him. They believe - thanks to their mother - he is living in Gemany. Each night, they go to the strain station to watch the train bound for Germany depart, and one day they finally board it. Their journey is filled with extremes: physical sickness, moral collapse, suffering, rape, jealousy and death. It is also a journey that initiates them into the reality that is life. As they are chased by indifferent relatives and only semi-dedicated police, Alexandros and Voula travel deeper into danger - and closer to liberation. Seen through the children′s eyes, the quaint traditional Greece of postcards seems surreal. When the children do finally manage to reach the border, it is of course not the border with Germany they cross into. The journey is the story, which turns out to be a disappointing, pointless exercise that began as an attempt at purging their loneliness. Finally, Landscape in the Mist is a statement on the utter deficiency of contemporary society.
