Program Note
Three autonomous stories - The Weeping Meadow, The Third Wing and Retum- elegantly chronicle the broader story of a time just passed, and acts as a summation of our recent departed century, and the century we are embarking on. The relationship between Alexis and Eleni starts in Odessa, in 1919, with the arrival of the P.Amy. As two Greek refugees on the way home, they develop their relationship. Arriving back a their village, their idea of marriage proves unpopular with everyone. They leave and wander Greece until Alexis heads to the United States. The Second World War begins, wherein Alexis dies at Okinawa fighting for the Americans, and is followed by Greece′s descent into civil war The story then takes a generational shift, as Alexis and Eleni′s sons choose to fight on opposing sides. Angelopoulos′ first female protagonist since Reconstruction begins as a love-struck teenaged girl, grows into womanhood and motherhood, and ends as a solitary woman intimate with tragedy. Shades of classical Greek myth and mythology linger throughout the story, from Helen to Oedipus to Seven Against Thebes.
