Program Note
Orator discloses the dark side of the glory of the Russian Revolution through a compassionate gaze upon the people whose lives had been helplessly racked by its iron principles. The film poses the question, “can the changes induced by the Revolution really improve the lives of the people?" Set in a small village in Uzbekistan, Iskander who has three wives inadvertently becomes an orator during the October Revolution. The Communist Party respects his ability as a superb provocateur, yet they cannot overlook his polygamous family values. Ironically, his speeches may be useful to the Revolution, but are the contrary to his lifestyle. Eventually, Iskander is forced to part with the son he had with the Party′s chief secretary, and his three wives as the Revolution calls for it. Then is man just a tool for the revolution? The film is a brief report on the cruel faces of reform and its impact on the conditions of life. (Kang So-Won)
