Program Note
Chung tells the story of one Korean immigrant boy growing up in Japan. Tesong, the main character, goes to a high school for Korean immigrants. His baseball team qualifies to participate in Japan′s official tournament for the first time. The team plays the first game with great expectations from their families and school, but they lose. Tesong leaves the team feeling guilty and disappointed. He starts to take a second look at his life: Surrounding Tesong are other tensions. A girl is excluded from the group of friends because she is going out with a Japanese boy. Some parents accept their Japanese son-in-law, however, are still hostile towards the Japanese. After a long examination of his life, Tesong finally accepts who he is. Chung handles this serious topic cheerfully but not frivolously with the help of polished techniques and humorous narration.
