This feature-length documentary is by Zhang Yuan, a key leader of the ′Tiananmen Generation′ and the establishment of a world-wide reputation for Chinese cinema. Zhang′s latest effort employs the direct cinema format following Li Yang, who has been stirring up China by calling out, "Study English like crazy!" Crazy English captures Li Yang′s ambition, passion, business, and actions. In 1988, the 19-year-old Li began his nationwide ′Crazy English′ lecture tour, and since then has conveyed the necessity and ways of English study to more than 13 million people throughout the mainland. As Li Yang puts it, his tenets, "English studying is the shortcut to success" and "Make international money!" are the result of mixing practical philosophy with spirit and English studying methods to boost national self-confidence. Crazy English explores the creation of a popular hero, Li Yang, as a result of a combination of economic fetishism and neo-nationalism in China, a country undergoing rapid capitalization.
