Program Note
People in military uniforms stop rural buses to rob them of valuables, and a journalist who tries to tell the truth is assassinated by the unidentified assailant. People are kidnapped, the press is silent and funerals are frequent. In the country where violence and fear have become routine, a doctor is living silently, not running away, nor resisting. How long can the doctor stay in this place, where doctors are considered to be a simple target of use rather than social respect? The film is set in a French-speaking Mediterranean country, but does not specify a country or a historical event. It is unclear why the government troops and the rebels are fighting each other, and the two are indistinguishable in that they are the main culprits of violence with guns. The film, which features a restrained production that excludes the use of music, gives a holistic impression of the experience of living in a society where violence and fear have become routine. The sixth feature, directed by Rabah AMEUR ZAIMECHE, who has already established international fame with works such as Adhen and Story of Judas, has entered the Locarno competition. This work is more meaningful because it was made in Algeria, where the director was born. (Dany LEE)
