A monumental documentary filmed from an anthropologist’s perspective by directors Verena Paravel and Lucien Castaing-Taylor of the Harvard University’s Sensory Ethnography Lab. Two directors board a trawler with twelve GoPro cameras and no camera crew. The slanted dark sea, chains pulled out of the water, fish sloshing about on deck, seagulls gathering in around the boat, bloody water poured into the sea, and fishermen cleaning the fish have been captured wonderfully on camera. A world devoid of narrative and meaning. All that exists is the scenery and time inside and outside of the fishing boat. Leviathan may draw out something like a moan or a sound of admiration at the bizarre power of GoPro cameras that seem to project a gaze that is completely different from that of humans—a gaze that may well be that of the biblical monster Leviathan. It is a marvelous and entrancing cinematic experience. (KANG Sowon)
